The power of the one-off
If you’re writing a sales email, stop! It’s time to step away from the computer and clear your head. That’s because everything you thought that you knew about writing a successful sales email is wrong.
When you’re getting ready to send a sales-based email, you’re probably filling the body with information about who you are, what you do, and why your customer should want to work with you. You might even include a few tidbits about what makes you better than the competition. Don’t do this! Why? It’s similar to when you get cornered at an event by someone who only talks about themselves. They tell you who they are, what they do, and what makes them so interesting. Boring! Chances are you’re looking for the nearest exit before they’ve finished speaking. However, if that same person came up to you and said hello, followed by the fact that they recently heard you’re THE person in the industry they should speak with if they want X,Y,Z then they’d have your attention, wouldn’t they?
When you prospect through email, you’re not actually competing against other companies in your industry. You’re only up against the emails in someone’s inbox. Keep your message short, sweet and to the point. A great one-off email will only be three sentences long in body. The first line will connect with the reader by pinpointing them. Secondly, share what it is you want or what you’re selling in one, succinct line. Thirdly, write a brief call to action.
Most importantly, grab their attention through a strong subject line. If you have a well-established brand, incorporate that into your subject line. If not, come up with something that will grab their attention, such as a special offer or even a freebie.
